Welcome again to this week's career advice column, and thanks for putting your faith in our country. I hope we match up to your expectations.
I am using one of the letters we received, as the basis for this month's column. I received a CV, which said in the covering letter “I want a Job”
Now, I do admire that persons forthright approach, but let's be honest, not everyone else would. Last month I asked you to look at your real passion and why you wanted to come to Ireland and work.
Once you have a job here, it is important that you should actually look forward to it. Who could possibly look forward to what I am doing, you may well say. Well ask yourself why you are doing it. The time will pass no matter what you are doing, so you might as well make the most of it.
If you have not got a job, or want to get one that better matches what you want you want to do, or what you are qualified for, then read the following tips.
11 essential tips to landing the job you really want.
I promise these tips will make your search much more fruitful. - Understand clearly, what it is about the job that you are applying for, that will make you happy.
- Know precisely what it is about you, which will make you good for the job.
- Find out the name of the person who is hiring and write to them specifically.
- Make sure your covering letter, outlines the benefits that you will bring directly to the specific job that you are applying for.
- Follow any instructions you are given.
- Make sure that your English is fluent and that there are no spelling mistakes in your letter or CV.
- If you get an interview, make sure that you are smartly dressed and turn up promptly.
- Ensure any referees that you quote are fully prepared to speak with any potential employer.
- Do your research on the company and ask intelligent questions at the interview.
- Always tell the truth
- Smile.
These 11 tips may seem really obvious to a lot of you, but I never cease to be amazed at how people send off letters and just “hope” they will get a job.
The reason that people want to hire you, is because the job you will do is worth more to them than the money it costs to hire you. You need to add value to the employer.
So be fair to yourself, and go for the job you are really worth. And don't get disheartened, Colonel Sanders, the guy who Founded Kentucky Fried Chicken, was turned down 1,007 times before he got his big break.
His attitude was very simple “I know what I want, it is just a pit other people can't see it” and he kept that attitude to himself and never gave up – the rest is history.
We may have lost the run of ourselves in many ways with the “Celtic Tiger”, but there are still a lot of self respecting Irish people who are great employers, so make sure you don't give up – because we need you guys now!
