It does not have to be specifically Ireland, but whatever country you are marketing your product in, it is vital that you identify your customers’
- Desires – what do they really want, because a lot of purchases are based on wants not needs – I mean who NEEDS a Porsche?
- Problems – what pain do they currently have that your offering will ease or cure?
Because when you know these, then you know WHY they will buy, and subsequently, it will be easier to ensure you have more customers. So let’s have a look at what customers’ problems and desires are in general, and then you will define them for each of your own customer groups.
Classify customers’ Desires
In reality, over 90% of purchase decisions are based on people’s desires, not only on “what we need.” I mean, how many of us grew up drinking tap water, yet we all still pay huge sums of money for water in bottles. Yes, we do need liquid to stay alive, but do we really need designer label water?
Classify customers’ Problems
People visit the doctor or dentist either because they have a pain, or to prevent pain. Why would people talk to your company – which problems would make them call you?
But this is just the beginning of the exciting marketing strategy creation. Next you need to look at the product you market and whether it really responds to the problems and desires of your customers.

Although you probably deal with various customers, there always prevail specific customer types which are slightly different for every individual company.
OK, let’s assume for now that you have identified your most profitable customer groups. You now have the secret to multiplying your profits.
Do the following and we can guarantee that your profits will increase exponentially:
- Spend the most time with these customers and love them to death
- Cross-sell to other customers, those services which your most profitable customers buy
- Focus your lead generation efforts on prospects with similar characteristics
- Ask each one of them for two referrals, after all, since they are giving you so much profit, they must be happy
This way you will make sure you focus on the right thing in all your marketing activities.

The secret to getting magnified effect on your your marketing is to discover customers’ “watering hole”. You probably already know where all your customers must gather from time to time, just like the watering hole the hunter waits for the game beside.
There is an old saying which goes “You will catch more bees with honey than with vinegar”, so it probably makes sense to start thinking about what is the type of honey that will attract customers and where is the best place to put it, so they will find it.
Each of your customer groups will have one or more watering holes so it is your responsibility to know your customers well enough to understand precisely where or what those watering holes are.
Identify watering holes of your main customer groups, and find out how you could make contact with them.
If you want to get this really right, you might even call one or two customers and have a chat with them, so that the info you work with is based on reality.
This gives you an idea of where you could make contact with more prospects effectively. Later on in this manual, we will look at how you could approach these potential channel partners and start working with them in a mutually beneficial way.
